I am writing in regards to your Freshman UWM Post. I am a concerned parent with three young adults starting college this fall! I couldn’t help but notice how much info was offered about drinking, the do’s and don’ts, and how not to get caught with it in your book bag. Page 15, tip #6: “Smuggling alcohol”; page 19, “Cheap booze is sometimes best”; and page 20, “Take two and call me in the morning.” Alcoholism is on the up rise; it is no joke, it’s not a game, and it should not be taken lightly! Alcoholism ruins quality life for people or worse yet, takes lives! I have seen both with two friends. Drinking is a choice, not a way of life. It’s OK to say no and to be proud of this choice, and to stand behind it! Life is too short to sell yourself short and to hide behind problems that won’t go away by drinking. So I say and challenge people to stand up to life and its challenges, and take grin and bare it without the booze! We have support groups to help lines as choices when life becomes challenging. There is also CR – Celebrate Recovery – through various churches that I can vouch for. Life is so precious, too short! Colleges need to take drinking seriously by having mandated [sic] educational various mediums about the dangers of drinking! I hope you will consider presenting this problem to UWM as a whole! To present this in your column regularly to students!
