Downer Festival Sept. 7-8
The Urban Playground Foundation hosts their annual festival Sept. 7-8 on Downer Avenue, featuring a bicycle tour, auction and live entertainment. The festival was previously held at Brady Street but moved to Downer Avenue to add a second family stage. Musical groups include: De La Buena, Fever Marlene, Northern Room, The Gufs and other family entertainment. All proceeds will go towards improving the quality and access to parks, trails and playgrounds in Milwaukee. For more information go to www.urbanplayground.info

New Walgreens open
The new larger Walgreens at 2950 N. Oakland Ave. opened Thursday with a frozen food section double the size of the old store and an expanded school supplies area. According to a Walgreens manager, the old store on 2830 N. Oakland Ave. was purchased, but the new tenant is still unknown.

$2 million for campus master plan
The State Building Commission issued the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee $2 million in August to be used for creating a master plan for the campus. The master plan will look at creating a downtown campus for public health and a west side campus for engineering said Tom Luljak, vice chancellor of university relations. The funds will go toward hiring a consultant to look into the program and physical needs of the campus, said Luljak.

New campus safety initiatives
In UWM’s effort to prevent violence on campus in Milwaukee, a new campaign called Safety Awareness for Everyone (SAFE) began Aug. 29. UWM staff hopes to have a text messaging system in place for emergency notification after gathering student cell phone numbers early fall semester. Other incentives include free self-defense classes, continued extended hours for Be On the Safe Side (BOSS) from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. every day, and new signs above the emergency phone posts all around campus. Talib Kweli and O.A.R. headline Pantherfest ‘07
Talib Kweli and O.A.R. will be performing at Pantherfest 2007, which is being held on Sept. 7 at the Summerfest Grounds. Pre-show festivities will kick off at 5 p.m. with Kweli taking the stage around 7:30 p.m. Admission is free for UWM students and tickets can be picked up with a valid student ID in the Union. Tickets cost $15 for other area college students and $25 for the general public.
