For the second week in a row, the Green Bay Packers didn’t lose. As an added bonus, this week, they played a game.
Fresh off their bye week, the Packers beat the Miami Dolphins in a 34-24 shootout, earning the first victory at Dolphin Stadium in the team’s history.
In the city where Dan Marino threw the majority of his 420 career touchdown passes, Brett Favre notched career TD numbers 404 and 405 en route to the Packers second win of the season. The future hall-of-famer has now thrown a touchdown pass in 36 NFL stadiums after recording his first and second at Dolphin Stadium.
Favre hit Donald Driver and David Martin on the touchdowns, but had limited options beyond them.
With Robert Ferguson likely out for the season and Koren Robinson likely to be suspended for a year, Driver led a thin receiving core with 10 catches for 93 yards and a touchdown.
Injuries and other circumstances forced Favre to throw to not-so-household names like Ruvell Martin and Chris Francies, each of whom made some nice grabs and played surprisingly well.
Ahman Green also provided aid for a depleted passing game, finishing with a 118 yards and a 70-yard trip to the end zone.
Facing a 10-6 halftime deficit, the Packers got help from an unlikely source — their defense. Charles Woodson returned an interception for a touchdown to give the Packers their first lead of the game early in the third quarter, putting them ahead 13-10.
The pick was one of three for the defense off former Detroit Lion Joey Harrington who, despite the turnovers, finished with 414 yards and two touchdowns, completing 33 of 62 passing attempts. Harrington found a friend in another former NFC North foe in ex-Bear Marty Booker, who finished with seven grabs for 110 yards and a touchdown.
Following the Woodson interception, the Packers were able to hold on to the lead in a high-scoring second half, improving their all-time record against the Dolphins to 3-9, and their 2006 record to a slightly less humiliating 2-4.
The loss drops the Dolphins to a disappointing 1-6 heading into their bye week.
The Packers will return to Lambeau Field next week for a date with Matt Leinart and the unpredictable Arizona Cardinals.
