Not even the weather can stop the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s soccer team these days.

After the game against the UW-Green Bay Phoenix originally scheduled for Wednesday night was postponed to Thursday afternoon, it only proved to delay what appears to now be inevitable — the Panthers just cannot lose.

The Panthers fought their way to a 1-0 victory, winning back the coveted Chancellor’s Cup in the process.

“It was important to us,” said coach Jon Coleman. “We let it slip away last year, so to regain it was big, especially against a team like Green Bay who has been playing well all year. It is definitely something we’ll use to keep the momentum going.”

The momentum Coleman is referring to is the Panthers not suffering a loss in their last eight games. After a slow start early in the season, the Panthers appear to have found their stride, and with the Horizon League Tournament just around the corner, it couldn’t have come at a better time.

“I feel like we’ve had a fresh start. We’re more focused now, and we’re more in tune with each other,” Coleman said.

In the 35th minute, mid-fielder Dan Horst subbed into what was at that point a scoreless event. Not a minute later Horst scored what turned out to be the game-clinching goal.

“It was a good ball, (Martin Castro) set it up nicely,” Horst said. “We’re used to playing together so that helps. We joked earlier, we actually had an exam before the game, so in a sense we already had a connection.”

As head coach Jon Coleman can attest, it looks as though the journey has only just begun.

“It feels like a new season,” he said.
