Sweetest Day
What started in the early 1920s as a candy company employee’s attempt to spread merriment and goodwill to the underprivileged through gifts of sweets has broadened into a national holiday, celebrated most frequently in the Great Lakes region.
Although the exact definition of what this holiday celebrates varies by source, Sweetest Day is generally recognized as a day of card and gift exchanges as tokens of appreciation between parties in close relationships.
According to Hallmark, this holiday has so grown in popularity in the last five years that the company went from stocking 48 Sweetest Day cards in 2000 to 151 cards in 2006 (and who says there’s no such thing as a Hallmark Holiday?).
