As long as alcohol has been around people have been reinventing ways to drink it.
If there is one thing that our generation has contributed to this alcoholic history, it would be bomb shots.
So what exactly is a bomb shot?
When made correctly, a bomb shot consists of a shot glass filled with liquor of some kind and another glass filled with about 4 ounces of another beverage. The “bomb” part comes in when the shot glass is dropped into the other glass and then chugged down as quickly as possible.
Although bomb shots can be made of virtually anything the bartender or bar patron desires, when most people hear this term only one thing comes to mind: the king of all energy drinks, Red Bull.
Since its introduction in 1997, Red Bull has emerged as an essential ingredient in a variety of alcoholic beverages.
Thanks to its delicious flavor and high caffeine content, it can be mixed with a number of different liquors to give a jumpstart to anyone who is struggling to keep their eyes open until bar close.
Some of the most popular bomb shots made with Red Bull include “Crack Whores,” “O Bombs,” “Cherry Bombs,” “Jack Bombs” and the most popular of all the bomb shots, “Jäger Bombs.”
Although Red Bull is revered as one of the most important bomb-shot ingredients, there are some bomb shots out there that do not contain it.
One of the most popular sans-Red Bull bomb shots is the “Flaming Dr Pepper.” This shot is made up of a shot glass filled with amaretto and topped off with 151 rum. The 151 is then lit on fire and dropped into a glass of beer and chugged down. When made correctly it tastes just like warm Dr Pepper.
Another popular bomb shot, especially around St. Patrick’s Day, is the “Irish Car Bomb.” This shot is made with one-half shot Irish cream liquor, and one-half shot Irish whiskey. The shot glass is dropped into a glass of Irish stout and chugged. When made correctly this drink tastes similar to a chocolate milkshake.
So now the next time you’re down on Water Street or at your local watering hole, make your generation proud and order a round of bomb shots. Just remember: always drink responsibly and don’t forget to tip your bartender!
