After University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women’s volleyball teammate Leanne Felsing dug and set her way into Offensive Player of the Week earlier this month, Melissa David clawed her path to the same honor last week.
David, a senior outside hitter from Savoy, Ill., earned the award by hammering 32 kills in two matches against Youngstown State and Cleveland State, both members of the highly competitive Horizon League.
David took care of business, hitting a clean .426 average to lead the Panthers to consecutive victories.
In the first match Sept. 22 against the Penguins of Youngstown State, David smashed 17 kills, tallying 21 points, trailing only Cheryl Hegemann, who had 22. David rallied the Panthers to victory in the first Horizon League match after the team lost the first game.
She followed up the first contest by leading all Panthers in scoring the following night against Cleveland State, racking up 17 points while also leading Milwaukee with 15 kills.
David was unavailable for comment.
The Panthers (8-4 overall, 2-0 Horizon) will take a road trip to Chicago this weekend to face conference foes Loyola (7-9, 1-1) and Illinois-Chicago (8-10, 2-0).
