The fall season is the one season many people love to hate. Of all the other seasons, autumn is the only one where you can get depressed in the beginning, middle and the end.

Summer is gone, the temperature is dropping fast and all you have to look forward to is winter. Yikes. As crazy as it may sound, though, there are ways to appreciate this season. By the end of this article you might learn to like, maybe even love this season.

“F” is for “free time”

Remember how busy you were in the summer working and earning money to go to college? Free time may have eluded you then, but in this season, free time is an abundant resource that begs to be taken advantage of. Whether it is indoors or outdoors, your free time can be better spent taking a nap than doing homework. Go outside for a walk or stay indoors and play a board game. Whatever you do, be aware that free time is allergic to finals time, so enjoy its company while it lasts.

“A” is for “asphalt”

It may seem odd, but you will miss the gray and dull streets once you can’t see them anymore. Once the snow falls, you’ll remember how easy it was to walk and not slip on a patch of ice or how effortless it was to drive your car. The terrain change is deceiving as well, as the first snowfall can look beautiful, but you’ll soon be reminded how dirty it can get a few days later. So, love the roads and sidewalks while you can still see them.

“L” is for “leaves”

How can one think about fall and forget the leaves? The changing colors, the leaf piles, the raking … Well, not so much the raking, but you get the point. Sure, the leaves changing colors actually means they’re dying, but that just means you should appreciate them more. The leaves are literally dying for your enjoyment. That is a sacrifice that deserves to be recognized. But don’t be sad for the leaves: be happy that you get to look at the pretty colors for a few weeks. It’s what the leaves would want.

“L” is for “longer nights”

Long nights are a given in fall (the days do get shorter, Einstein), but that just means you can start the party sooner. Sure, maybe the sun setting at 4:30 p.m. is a little bit of a let-down, but you do most of your partying at night anyway. Just think of it as an invitation to party longer and stay up later. Hey, if nature itself is giving you an open invitation to have more fun, it can’t be bad, can it?

So now that you know what the fall season has to offer, one can only hope that you look at this time of year with more compassion and understanding. Now go make use of your free time and party hard. Nature insists.
