Badgers claw their way to overtime tie

UWM had lead with 4 minutes left to play

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers men’s soccer team (3-5-1) headed to Madison Sept. 20 to take on in-state foe University of Wisconsin (4-3-1).

The Panthers took the lead twice but the Badgers managed to dig their way back into the game to settle for a 2-2 overtime tie.

The Panthers came into the game winless on the road and it seemed as though that would change as they led 2-1 with four minutes left. Wisconsin ruined the party for the Panthers in the 86th minute with the game-tying goal by senior Aaron Hohlbein. Hohlbein scored on a header, burying a corner kick pass inside the far post.

In the first overtime, the Badgers unleashed a flurry of attacks but the stingy Panthers defense denied every scoring chance.

In the second overtime, the only close call was when Badger forward Reid Johnson blasted a shot that sophomore Grant Fernstrum saved with just 55 seconds left.

Junior Chris Lins scored the Panthers’ final goal in the 54th minute. Lins netted the goal off a flawless corner kick from sophomore Travis Phillips. Less than two minutes prior to his goal, Lins took down a Badger attacker in the penalty area, resulting in a penalty kick that the Badgers capitalized on.

“We gave up two set piece goals,” said head coach Jon Coleman. “They put pressure on us, we don't concentrate, we don't go out and put pressure on the ball, and they serve it in and a guy is free on the back post.”

Junior Zeke Dombrowski scored the game’s first goal in the ninth minute. After senior Steve Sperl was fouled just outside the box, senior Craig Mallace sent a free kick to the far post where junior Steve Bode collected the ball and sent a centering pass to Dombrowski, who headed home his first goal of the season.

Milwaukee’s scoring chances were limited but Sperl almost put the Panthers over the top with a stifling 25-yard blast that went just wide of the Badger goal.

Wisconsin out-shot Milwaukee 16-14 and had six corner kicks to the Panthers’ three. There were three yellow cards also issued, two went to the Badgers while the Panthers recorded one.

The tie puts the Panthers at 3-5-1 while the Badgers find themselves with a 4-3-1 record.

Former UWM men’s soccer players will take on the current Panthers team Sept. 29 in the Alumni game at Engelmann Field.
