Tyler Bucholz can't even drink beer if the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee track team goes out to celebrate after conference, and with the way he runs, a celebration might be in order.
Bucholz, an 18-year-old freshman sprinter from Minnesota, is a key component of a track team searching for a conference title this week in Indianapolis.
But even before conference, this week he will be competing in his first decathlon, also in Indianapolis. The decathlon is composed of the 100-meter dash, running long jump, shot put, high jump, 400-meter run, 110-meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1,500-meter run: 10 events, but only one winner.
Bucholz hails from Minneapolis and said he chose UWM because he "loved the campus after touring" and "it was the only school that mutually offered both my friend Kelsey and I a scholarship," referring to Kelsey Conrad, who also runs track for the UWM team.
He said he loves track and couldn“t imagine experiencing college any other way as he has met so many people already through the team and has really had a great time.
In some ways, Tyler Bucholz is a typical freshman; he takes basic freshmen courses, is a kinesiology major, and loves the college experience. And yet, he remains very different; not too many people run the 200-meter dash in 21.95 seconds.
He also runs the 400 in conference along with participating in the 4x1, 4x4 relays, expecting to place in all.
I asked him to be honest so he was, as he looks forward to his future endeavors with optimism. So hopefully after the decathlon, and especially after this weekend with the Horizon League Championship, Tyler Bucholz will bring home some hardware and go out to celebrate.
Just remember if you see him to congratulate him, but don“t offer him a beer.
