Changes to Chapter 17 considered

The University of Wisconsin System has formed a committee to revise UW System policy Chapter 17 regarding student misconduct.

If changed, students could face penalties from the school for off-campus violations such as drinking tickets or noise violations.

UWM Student Association President Samantha Prahl urged students to get involved and protest the changes to Chapter 17.

It is important that you make your voice heard on this issue and tell the committee that you wont stand for double-jeopardy and you want the university to stay out of your personal business, Prahl wrote in a campus-wide email sent out on Wednesday, April 26.

There will be a listening session on Monday, May 7, at 4 p.m. in the Wisconsin Room of the Union to discuss Chapter 17.

UWM to hire a sustainability coordinator

By fall semester, UWM officials plan to hire a sustainability coordinator.

According to administrators, the new coordinator will work on promoting sustainable products, decreasing storm water runoff, and eliminating surplus material. It is all part of an effort the make the university more environmentally sustainable.

At the same time the Student Association is also forming an environmental group that they hope will bring all environmental organizations together and work closely with the new coordinator.

Update: Downer Avenue redevelopment

The public had a chance to voice their opinions on new zoning regulations for a four-story parking structure and retail spaces on North Downer Avenue at a City Plan Commission meeting last Monday.

The debated space is located on the southeast corner of East Belleview Avenue and North Downer Avenue.

The potential parking structure is part of New Land Enterprises Downer Avenue redevelopment project, which was already partly approved at a February Common Council meeting. It is planned to include 52 condo units, 78 hotel rooms, 76 residential parking spaces and 112 hotel/commercial parking spaces.

At the same meeting, New Land Enterprises asked to purchase a city-owned parking lot at 2574 N Downer Ave. declaring it was surplus to municipal needs. The motion was also referred to staff for further consideration.

Potatoes on campus are organic

UWM officials have taken the first step toward getting more organic food choices on campus.

Thanks to a partnership with the Sierra Student Coalition, all fresh potatoes on campus are organic and produced in Wisconsin.

Scott Hoffland, director of UWM Union Restaurant Operations, is now on a task force with other UW System schools to find ways to bridge the gap between such large institutions and regional farmers, according to a SSC e-mail.
