Maybe if Freaks and Geeks would have been picked up by a different network, like theyd planed to do after the cancellation, they would have made it. Unfortunately, the show wasnt picked up and that was the end of it.
Two series captured two eras “ the 70s and 80s. Spot-on werent necessarily competing but they were unique shows that suffered different end results.
FOX carried That 70s Show from the pilot debut. The show received massive ratings and ultimately led to eight full seasons whereas Freaks and Geeks was cancelled after one season on NBC.
It is safe to say both of these comedic shows, which started off a year apart, were possibly too similar. As That 70s Show prevailed, Freaks and Geeks didnt necessarily get the audience to stick around, though their pilot also received high ratings. Both shows introduced young actors who proved themselves to the acting biz.
Since joining the FOX primetime line-up in fall 1998, That 70s Show set numerous records for a FOX comedy, including the largest audience of adults aged 18-49 within its competitive 8:30 p.m. Tuesday timeslot. Also, with the lively cast that offers breakthrough performances from its actors/actresses, That 70s Show was voted one of the best television series by Entertainment Weekly in 1998.
After season two, the movie offers piled in for the cast members. The hilarious Ashton Kutcher got a lead role in Dude, Wheres My Car? and recently The Guardian. Topher Grace acted in Traffic and is also appearing in the new upcoming Spiderman 3 as Venom. Wilmer Valderrama is presently working on season two of MTVs Yo Momma and had a key role in Fast Food Nation.
Freaks and Geeks debuted on Sept. 25, 1999, on NBC, also had luck with its cast making it out of the television shows and onto the big screen.
James Franco has been in countless box-office hits. He starred in Spiderman as Harry Osborne and had the lead role as a fighter-pilot in Flyboys. Jason Segel is now on the show How I Met Your Mother and Seth Rogen played a role in 40-year-old Virgin.
It seems that both shows were popular in their debut season and had high ratings. That 70s Show has had eight seasons. The cast has become the latest addition to the Hollywood scene. Despite cancellation after one season, Freaks and Geeks had a wide fan base, but could not live up to the rest of the shows on primetime NBC.
Freaks and Geeks was a hit show for a couple episodes and then NBC put the show on different nights and times, which led fans to wonder where the show went. This was a big reason the show failed.
Also, with both shows revolving around the 70-80s era, That 70s Show focused more on individual problems involving a humor-based platform that fans couldnt get enough of.
It was a weekly show that the ratings proved had the American people in front of the TV every Tuesday night, even when the show switched to Sundays. FOX had a hit on their hands that led the people to watch other FOX series.
Freaks and Geeks was aimed towards a younger fan base, because they used actors who were supposed freshman; (John Daley, Samm Levine and Martin Starr) These youths didnt make it beyond this show, except for a few minor characters in B-films.
Maybe if Freaks and Geeks would have been picked up by a different network, like theyd planed to do after the cancellation, it could have made it. Unfortunately, the show wasnt picked up and that was the end of it.
There were many lingering questions at the end of season one that should have left the audience captivated, but sadly, there was no season two.
It is all about ratings and income for networks.
