The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee womens track and field team broke a sprint medley relay record Saturday at the Drake Relays.

Senior Timeka Walker, sophomore Shannon Buttchem and freshmen Laura Ring and Kelsey Conrad combined on a time of 4:03.10, which placed 17th in the event. The previous record was set at 4:03.91 at the same meet in 2005.

On Friday, sophomore Beth Zimmerman also set a new record for UWM in the triple jump. Zimmerman leapt 39-6 ½ to reset her previous record. She had originally set the record at 38-11 last week at the Kansas Relays.

Freshman Regina Pierce also nearly topped the mark, jumping 38-7 to take third. Zimmerman also finished second in the long jump (18-5 ¼).

Senior Taryn Cozine also had a big day, taking second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:02.90. The time was a career best and is now the fifth-best mark in school history.

Sophomore Jenni Saarinen also had a successful day by placing second in the high jump, clearing 5-6. With that mark, she tied for first place, but was runner-up based on attempts. Saarinen also competed in the javelin, throwing 117-0 for sixth.

The regular season comes to a close next weekend as the Panthers will be broken up among two in the twilight meets. Some of the team will head to the Butler Twilight in Indianapolis, while the rest of the squad will head for Madison.

The Horizon League Championships follow in Indianapolis on May 10 and 11.
