Next time you go shopping for a certain hair treatment or facial mask, make a turn into the grocery store instead of the drugstore. By picking up a few ingredients from the produce isles, your body will thank you from the inside and out.

There are thousands of miracle products available in stores that claim to be able to cure an ailment or help that beauty concern. But when you turn the product over and read the label, there are tons of mystery chemicals and ingredients. Even if they are inactive ingredients, it can be alarming.

Do you really want to put all those chemicals into your body or onto your skin when you dont even really know what they do? Instead of attempting to take care of your body using harsh chemicals, it is worth a shot to give some herbal remedies and natural beauty products a try.

The common cold

College campuses are a breeding ground for this evil illness. Echinacea is an herb that is well known for its immune system boosting properties. Taking Echinacea while sick can help to reduce the amount of time you remain sick.

This herb is taken orally and can be found at any drug store for a relatively inexpensive price.

Insomnia

Sleep-inducing medications can be scary because they can be addictive and require at least eight hours of sleep before you no longer feel drowsy.

Valerian Root is completely natural, safe and non-addictive herb that is an effective sleep aid. The herbs chemical properties inhibit the nerve impulses that keep the body from being disturbed when sleeping. This herb is taken orally and can be found at drug stores.

Acne

Tea tree oil has been proven effective in helping reduce zits. The oil kills fungus and bacteria, including some that are resistant to antibiotics.

It can be used effectively as an on-the-spot acne treatment. You apply the oil directly to the acne and it will help the healing process.

Damaged Hair

Instead of buying drugstore hair treatments there are two recipes for treatments that are equally as effective and inexpensive. To soften your hair and add shine, a honey-based treatments work wonders.

Simply add one spoonful of honey into three or four cups of warm water, depending on the thickness of your hair. Stir the concoction until it is thoroughly mixed and pour it over your damp hair. Do not rinse the mixture out. Style your hair as normal and you are guaranteed to notice the added shine and softness.

Many people are constantly damaging their hair through excessive heat and coloring. To restore some moisture and strengthen your hair, mix one egg with two tablespoons of olive oil.

Apply the mixture evenly throughout your hair and allow it to sit for 10 minutes. Rinse your hair extremely well. The proteins and amino acids in the egg help strengthen your hair and the olive oil works to soften and moisturize.

Dry Skin

Similar to hair treatments, you can make your own facial mask. Nourishing facemasks act like an intensive moisture treatment for your skin. This can be very important after living through what seemed like the longest winter in history.

Combine one egg, one teaspoon of almond oil and one tablespoon of half and half. Apply it evenly to your face and leave on for about 15 minutes. Rinse your face with cool water and pat it dry. Your skin will be left feeling fresh and moisturized.

Next time you go shopping for a certain hair treatment or facial mask, make a turn into the grocery store instead of the drugstore. By picking up a few ingredients from the produce isles, your body will thank you from the inside out.
