The victims dont deserve to be transformed into symbols
There really is no other word to describe it. Im sickened. Physically and to the pit of my stomach, my disgust seems to eat at me like a tapeworm.
The words Virginia Tech have been on everyones lips all week, and naturally even UWM doesnt feel as safe as it once did. I wish that I could find something to feel sympathy for in the guy who did this, something that would make him human.
Im always disappointed in myself when I cant see past a persons actions, it makes me wonder if I am losing my perception.
But I just cant.
There is nothing human about taking the lives of innocent people. Thats the act of a monster. Taking life period is the act of a monster. My views have never changed about that, and Ive never really understood what anyone could possibly do where they would deserve to die for it.
Bad drug deal? Boo hoo, turn the guy in. He disrespected you? Go home and cry about it; its better than spending the next X number of years in prison for it.
This would be the perfect time to embrace a cause, and Im sure that when the initial shock wears off people are going to be trying to use it as a rallying point for gun control or an issue along those lines. It happened after Columbine, and our politicians have been using 9/11 for political gain on a depressingly predictable basis.
I dont want that. The victims dont deserve to be transformed into symbols. It feels too much like robbing a grave and then parading the body around for public inspection. I have always been good at detaching myself from the catastrophic events around me. The 9/11 attacks left me feeling cold, and I felt like a faker at the vigil I attended.
I would love to know why this is so different, and I think its because it has hit college students especially much closer to home. When this happens at a high school, people are shocked, but when they sit down and analyze it, it doesnt seem so surprising. After all, anyone can go to high school. Youre not paying for it, and of course there will be people there who dont care to be. The rogue element has a better chance of surviving there.
Not at a college. We all pay for being here. It would be cliched for an American to say that it is solely because of economical issues that a shooting shouldnt happened on a college campus, but a part of me feels that way and I cant help it.
While I dont wish for this kind of thing to happen anywhere, it still seems like because we pay for our education we should somehow be immune to it.
Ill resist the urge to delve into cliche. We all have heard that crap about how we should value every second because life is short, weve been hearing it all our lives. That isnt the point. There really is no point. There is no big lesson to be learned from all of this, Im sorry to say.
The only real advice to be offered is if you are depressed or troubled, try taking advantage of UWMs psychiatrists. They do, after all, get paid for being there and you are paying for their services.
There is nothing more to say. For once, Im speechless.
