Countdown to an early Christmas
32 things you need to know about the NFL Draft
By Ken Ryan
3. The Pack will draft a running back early. Green Bayâ??s odds-on first-round pick is running back Marshawn Lynch of Cal. If not him, they should take a back in round two
- The deepest position is wide receiver. Not only does the position have the best overall player in Calvin Johnson, it is filled with first round candidates in Ted Ginn Jr., Dwayne Jarrett, Robert Meachem and Dwayne Bowe.
- Only Sconnie Lock is Joe Thomas. The only for-sure Badger to be drafted is tackle Joe Thomas, who likely will go top five. Quarterback John Stocco could go in the late rounds. The good news is the Badgers will return 18 of 24 starters to their 2007 squad.
- The Pack will draft a running back early. Green Bay“s odds-on first-round pick is running back Marshawn Lynch of Cal. If not him, they should take a back in round two.
- JaMarcus Russell will go number one overall. Had the Raiders drafted Matt Leinart last year, they could have passed up on a QB this year and taken Calvin Johnson.
- Tampa will trade up with Detroit for the No. 2 pick and take Calvin Johnson. The Bucs need a playmaker and this guy is incredible.
- That means it“s bad news if you“re Gaines Adams. The Lions will go down to the fourth spot and this defensive end. Adams: prepare to join the worst franchise in professional sports and join other draft-busts of Motown.
- Brady Quinn will not slide. The Browns will use their third-overall pick on a franchise quarterback, ending speculation that Quinn will slide.
- Neither will Adrian Pederson. Buffalo will trade up to the seventh pick from Minnesota and fill their major need.
- Don“t worry, the Vikings will then do something stupid. They should draft a receiver, but who knows what they will do. That is, if they even get their pick in on time.
- Whoever the Giants, Jets or Eagles take, someone will boo. It“s a draft tradition. A-Rod will get booed as well.
- Drew Rosenhaus will make an outrageous claim. Suddenly becoming a new draft tradition.
- Mel Kiper“s big board will enter your dreams. You“ll wake up in a cold sweat on the Friday night before the draft wondering who Kiper has as his ninth-rated outside linebacker.
- The Texans should lock Mike Sherman out of their facility on draft day. B.J. Sander, Torrence Marshall, Ahmad Carroll â?¦
- Greg Olsen is the top tight end. Could he end up a Green Bay Packer to replace Bubba Franks?
- Ted Thompson will multiply his picks like rabbits. It might not be in round one, but Thompson will trade down to get additional picks. Last year he came in with six picks but ended up with a league-high 12 selections.
- Defensive linemen will also get rattled-off in top-20. First-round ends include Adams, Adam Carriker, Jamaal Anderson and tackles include Alan Branch and Amobi Okoye.
- The Texans will electrify their fan base for the second-straight year. Of course, by drafting a defensive player again. This time, cornerback Leon Hall.
- Michael Turner will be traded. San Diego“s back-up to LT will be involved somehow, someway in a draft day trade, probably for a first-round pick.
- New England will make two solid picks. The most active team this off-season is the only club coming in with two first-round picks, Nos. 24 and 28.
- Patrick Willis and Jon Beason are the top linebackers. A weak group overall.
- Whoever the Bengals draft, he will eventually be arrested. Probably before the 2009 season.
- Pacman Jones will steal the show, literally. He will come from behind and jump Commissioner Roger Goodell, who suspended him for the year.
- Troy Smith and Chris Leak, the BCS Championship quarterbacks, are terrible. If anyone takes either before the fourth round, they should be fired on the spot.
- ESPN will replay the same promo 30,000 times during the draft. They always show the top picks lifting weights or something along those lines. What about this year?
- Mike Ditka and Boobie Miles are a match made in heaven. If Ditka is suddenly hired as a GM, the former Permian Panther star will be drafted after Ditka trades away all his draft picks to move up.
- Randy Moss will be heavily rumored in trade talk. Whether it“s to the Pack or not, it will be a hot discussion on draft day.
- So will Lance Briggs. Maybe the Bears go ahead and trade him to move up and deal away Briggs in a sign-and-trade. The Redskins have been rumored.
- The Bears still suck. Get ready for 8-8 and 26 Grossman interceptions, Bears bandwagon hoppers.
- Baltimore needs to draft a playmaker. Please, Ravens, give that amazing defense some hope.
- Leon Hall is the top corner, LaRon Landry the top safety. Both areas are fairly deep. Green Bay could use a safety.
- Brett will be hunting or clearing brush during the draft. The over-under on days after the draft that he finds out who the Pack picked is probably abut eight and a half.
- If you“re still reading this, I admire your courage. You are definitely prepared for over 20 hours of NFL draft coverage and more, unfortunately, Chris Berman.
