UWM receives $2.5 million donation
David O. Nicholas, president and chief investment officer of Nicholas Co. Inc., has donated $2.5 million to the business program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The donation will be used to fund a new computer lab at the Sheldon B. Lubar School of Business that will feature professional databases, streaming financial news, financial software and dual-monitor computers.
UWM sets research plan in motion
UWM has set a speedy timetable for construction of a new $143 million engineering campus in Wauwatosa, according to a Journal Sentinel report.
Construction for the campus is currently set to begin in late 2008 as questions about funding the project persist.
The school does not yet own the land and has not yet expanded the faculty to accommodate the campus, but fears the consequences of lagging on the project.
The additional campus is aimed at attracting companies and jobs to the area through research-based projects.
New home for Jewish organization behind Zelazo Center
Hillel, a Jewish center for college students, will be getting a new home behind the Zelazo Center.
The University of Wisconsin-System Board of Regents agreed April 12 to sell the 0.18 acres of land, now being used as a parking lot, to the Milwaukee Jewish Federation.
The new building, which will face North Stowell Avenue, will provide more space for Hillel, whose current home on 3035 N. Stowell Ave. is too small for the organization.
The Regents decision to sell the property came after the Milwaukee Jewish Federations plans to demolish two houses at 2005 and 2009 E. Kenwood Blvd. for a potential future home was met by outrage from neighbors.
The Jewish Federation will buy the property for $219,000. But before anything is finalized, the city of Milwaukee needs to vacate a public alley located southwest of the intersection of East Kenwood Boulevard and North Prospect Avenue. That will provide proper room for the facility to be constructed.
