Only one University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Student Association presidential nominee remains after another was ruled as being 10 signatures short for approval, according to an unofficial candidates list.
The list, which was released late last week by SA Independent Elections Commissioner Ada Hyso to the nominees, showed that SA Sen. Robert Henry Grover has been approved as a candidate with 459 signatures. Carlo Albano, however, was not approved as a candidate, as he had only 440 signatures. Presidential candidates need 450 signatures to be eligible.
Hyso said in an e-mail that the official list of candidates will not be released until nominees go through the appeals process.
“We have to consider all their complaints before (we) publish the official candidates list,” she wrote. “If their complaints are well-grounded, they will be included in the official list of candidates.”
Grover said it“s important to release the ballot as soon as possible. He also said nominees should know why their nominations were not verified.
“I think it“s important for everyone to know why they didn“t get on the ballot,” he said.
Albano ran for SA president last year “ and nearly won. He and his running mate, vice presidential candidate Madeline Martin, finished second to Samantha Prahl and Jon Tingley, who won the four-way race for SA president and vice president.
Grover and vice presidential candidate Amanda Voigtlander were nominated under the Students United For Change (SUFC) party. Albano and his vice presidential nominee, Albulena Shabani, are running under the Milwaukee Panther Party (MPP).
Albano said he plans to submit violation forms. He said he and Shabani submitted nearly 600 signatures.
“To us the bottom line is we were aware of road blocks put in from the beginning from elections in the past,” Albano said.
According to the unofficial candidates list, there were 41 candidates nominated under the SUFC party. Of those nominees, 33 are listed as unofficially being verified to run. There were five at-large Senate nominees who are not verified, according to the list.
MPP had 25 candidates nominated to run. Of those, 18 are listed as unofficially being verified to run. Three nominees under the College of Letters & Science were deemed ineligible.
Hyso did not return a voicemail seeking comment Sunday night.
