Panthers split double-header at Miller Park after 1-0 complete game
By Mike Kennedy
I was able to get ahead and was then able to throw my curveball for strikes. Thats what I havent been able to do lately and it really helped me out.
The temperatures decreased outside of Miller Park, but the competition increased on Sunday when the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers faced conference rival Butler Bulldogs in a double-header.
The two teams split the series, with the Panthers (6-17 Overall, 5-3 Horizon League) losing the first game 5-2 to the Bulldogs (11-17, 4-7 Horizon), but winning the second with the help of Robert Michalkiewiczs shut-out 1-0 win to end the day.
I was able to get ahead and was then able to throw my curveball for strikes, said Michalkiewicz. Thats what I havent been able to do lately and it really helped me out.
Rob Brockel hit his 11th career home run, sailing a pitch out to left field in the first inning to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
It would be all Michalkiewicz from there on out, as the Panthers pitcher allowed only seven hits while striking out seven. It was his forth career complete game.
On the other end, Ryan Kruszka for the Bulldogs allowed only the Brockel home run while pitching eight innings with four strike-outs.
In the first game the Panthers lost their first home opener in 12 years 5-2, game one at Henry Aaron Field on Friday was postponed due to weather.
Butler pitcher Jon Dages allowed only one hit in five innings when the Panthers broke out to get a run on the board in the sixth when Shaun Wegner and Kyle Silver hit back-to-back doubles to make it a 4-1 ball game. Dan Luczak threw seven strikeouts and walked only two in his seven innings at Miller Park.
Nick Wichser made a spectacular catch while running into the left field fence to cut off a Bulldog attempt to steal the game, but after a Butler run in the eight extended the lead 5-1 it seemed inevitable that the Panthers would be defeated. They earned one run off an RBI by Ross McCoy in the ninth to close out the game.
The Panthers will host the University of Illinois-Chicago for a double-header April 10 at Henry Aaron Field starting at 1 p.m.
