The 8th Note Coffeehouse may be staying in its current location on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukees Unions ground floor after all.
At a Union Policy Board meeting on Monday, March 26, the board voted unanimously to keep the Union Activities Board (UAB), the group responsible for running the 8th Note, in Union, Room WG24, with the condition that other student organizations can reserve the space for events.
Student organizations wishing to reserve the 8th Note space for an event will have to meet with the UAB and receive their permission for the space starting next academic year. Only UWM student organizations will be able to reserve the 8th Note.
Board member Robert Grover said he supported keeping the 8th Note where it is on the Union ground floor as a service to UWM students.
“The 8th Note is one of the few student org offices that is used all the time by other students,” Grover said.
The UAB had been in danger of losing the 8th Note space. After being denied Senate Finance Committee funding in January, the UAB was to be given new office space in Union 385A, which would have left the UAB as an events planning organization and unable to operate the coffee shop.
Student Association (SA) President and Union Police Board (UPB) Allocation Chair Samantha Prahl said that it was important that the UAB keep the 8th Note as is.
“What would the 8th Note be without coffee?” said Prahl.
8th Note Events Coordinator Kevin Rammer was satisfied with the agreement and thinks that it may mean more efficiency in scheduling events in the future.
“Now orgs can just come in [the 8th Note] and schedule an event instead of having to go through the Union,” said Rammer.
The UPB also reallocated offices for several student organizations on the Unions third floor. If the current plans for next years office allocation hold up, the number of third floor offices with only one organization will be greatly reduced.
Under preliminary plans, only Delta Sigma Theta sorority, allocated for Room 387, would be the only organization by themselves in an office large enough to fit multiple organizations. This may change with the second round of appeals due Friday, April 6. After that there will be a UPB meeting on Wednesday, April 11 at 3:30 p.m. to determine the final office allocations for the 2007-08 academic year.
A complete list of tentative third floor office reallocations is available outside the student activities office organization mailboxes on the third floor of the Union.
