Track and Field sweeps another invite

On the womens side, a Milwaukee player won every event the team participated in.

It wasnt quite home, but theyll take it.

Running, gunning and tossing its way to a sweep of the mens and womens track and field championships, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee was victorious Saturday at the Warrior Invitational, which was hosted by Wisconsin Lutheran.

The meet took place in Wauwatosa, just on the other side of I-45 from the Medical College of Wisconsin at brand new Raabe Field.

On the womens side, a Milwaukee player won every event the team participated in.

In the 100-meter dash, freshman Kelsey Conrad paced the field with a time of 12.46 seconds, beating five Marquette Golden Eagles in the process.

Conrad, Timeka Walker, Emily Budde and Amy Sunby finished in that order in the 200-meter dash, sweeping the top four spots. Jenni Saarinen and Taryn Cozine were only one-hundredth of a second apart in the 200-meter dash, finishing first and second, respectively.

Laura Ring, Cozine, Walker and Sunby also finished first through fourth in the 400-meter dash. Junior Shannon Buttchen took the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:22.97.

Nick Gretz, a senior thrower for Milwaukee, broke the school record for shot put, throwing the really heavy ball 57 and ¾ feet. Gretz also won the discus, throwing it 164 feet, 10 inches.

Matt Dreifke was victorious for the first time in college, running the 800-meter dash in 1:58.04.

Other event winners for UWM were Nick Wichert in the hammer throw, Adam Podd in the pole vault, Jeremy Majors in the 800 and 1500-meter dashes, Trentin Edwards in the 400-meter dash, and both relay events.

Milwaukee travels down to Charleston, Ill., from Thursday to Saturday for the Eastern Illinois Invitational.
