The first step in finding new homes for student organizations at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee began last week.

Office allocations for student organizations on campus were posted on the third floor of the Union on the afternoon of Friday, March 9.

Now that the Union Policy Board (UPB) has collected office space applications from 86 different organizations for the 2007-08 academic year, the board has decided which offices will go to which organizations.

Any student organizations that wish to appeal the decisions have until Friday, March 16 to make a written appeal to the UPB. After that, there will be a hearing on the morning of Monday, March 26 to address the needs of any organizations that appeal.

Student Association President and UPB member Samantha Prahl said that organizations were grouped together in offices based on similar interests and shared officers.

Weve tried to make things as easy as possible for all of the orgs, Prahl said.

Of note, the Union Activities Board (UAB) may be relocated from Union, Room WG24, to an office on the third floor of the Union that they would share with the Kappa Delta Chi sorority.

UPB member Rich Givens says that the board will listen to any appeals from the UAB.

Its important to get them here and listen to their appeal, Givens said.

During Mondays meeting, Prahl estimated that about 75 percent of the student organizations that asked for new offices wanted their own office space. In the initial allocation plans, only seven organizations were given their own office.

There are 36 offices for campus organizations on the third floor, not counting the large rooms, known as bullpens, that can potentially hold dozens of organizations. Most organizations are sharing office space with at least one other group.

For now, there are no plans for the 8th Note space for next year. The UAB is free to appeal the UPBs decision.

Prahl said that the board will consider anyone who applies for that space, but that organizations will need to fit a certain criteria to fill some of the Unions prime space.

We need to be sure that any org who wants that spot will be able to utilize it to its maximum potential, Prahl said.

Since the reallocations were posted in the Union before press time, it is not currently known how many organizations plan on appealing.

The final Union office allocations will be posted on the third floor of the Union on Thursday, April 12.
