The article by Melissa Campbell (My date with salmonella peanut butter, March 5) offers nothing to the reader but stupidity and gross irresponsibility.
I, for one, am all for people imitating Jackass for the sake of entertainment. Im not a fan of Shock Radio, but I understand its appeal. But this?
What is this article doing in your paper? Shock journalism? Promoting the ignorance of a good sound recall of a product potentially hazardous and deadly?
I dont care if Campbell had already consumed half of her peanut butter. Would she continue to drive a car that had been recalled? If her life were at risk and the car had already been working fine for a few weeks?
Imagine the influence your paper potentially possesses. Then imagine how much harm you can do with your irresponsible articles. Will we learn how stupid seatbelts are next? Will we learn how to drink up to the point just before alcohol poisoning?
Im sure a lot of kids around here would like to know that information. If just one idiot on this campus follows the example of Campbell and ends up with a case of salmonella poisoning, you should be held responsible.
Perhaps instead of playing Russian roulette, Miss Campbell could have done some actual research, and compared the number of people who had already gotten sick with the actual size of this batch 2111. Then she would have at least known the actual odds that she was facing. Give us something besides trying to arouse a chuckle out of us!
Next week I look forward to her new article, Hey look, Im gonna punch myself in the face!
