The 2007 NFL Draft Scouting Combine is in the books and organizations are starting to have a pretty good feel on who they would like to select in the draft April 28 and 29.
Who will Green Bay Packers General Manager Ted Thompson take with the 16th overall pick? Here is a quick post combine position-by-position look at the prospects.
QUARTERBACKS
Both top quarterbacks, LSUs Jamarcus Russell and Notre Dames Brady Quinn, chose to work out limited, if at all. Russell weighed in 22 pounds heavier than Quinn but his incredible arm strength has him the favorite to be taken first overall by Oakland, while Quinns stock is falling.
On a side note, Ohio State Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith chose not to participate in speed and quickness drills, which are really his only strong suit. John Stocco of UW was the lightest and shortest quarterback.
RUNNING BACKS
Top running back Adrian Pederson did nothing to disappoint as he posted a 4.33 40 time.
Marshawn Lynch proved to be the second-best in this group by posting solid numbers across the board, including the top standing broad jump for an RB. Most mock drafts have him headed to 1265 Lombardi.
Chris Henry of Arizona is seeing his stock rise as well after posting the top RB 40 time.
WIDE RECIEVERS
Calvin Johnson of Georgia Tech is the best to come out in the draft in a long time and is the best player in this draft, but probably wont go first overall. His unbelievable combine numbers: 6-food-4-inches, 234 pounds, 4.33 40-yard dash, 43-inch vertical jump. Plus, hes got unbelievable hands.
Ted Ginns injured ankle wasnt healed in time for the Combine. Dwayne Jarrett of USC didnt run as well and likely will be available at 16.
Yamon Figures of Kansas State is seeing his stock rise by running the top 40 of all players at the combine, a 4.30.
TIGHT ENDS
Greg Olsen of Miami, a converted wide receiver, established himself as the best tight end by posting a 4.47 40. With tight end a strong need for the Pack, dont rule out Olsen going at 16.
Zach Miller posted disappointing combine numbers and his stock is falling.
OFFENSIVE LINEMAN
Wisconsin Badger and Brookfield native Joe Thomas is one of the top three players overall in this draft and proved his amazing athleticism by running a 4.89 40. Some team will have a 10-year cornerstone at tackle.
Levi Brown is the second-rated tackle. Ben Grubbs of Auburn is seen as the top guard.
Ryan Kalil of USC is the top center after one of the best lineman displays at the Combine.
DEFENSIVE LINEMAN
Gaines Adams of Clemson established himself as the top end with an incredible 4.38 40 and Michigans Alan Branch, with his 330 pound frame and tremendous athleticism, as the top tackle.
Adam Carriker of Nebraska, another end, could also go in the top half of the first round. Louisvilles Amobi Okoye is the second best tackle. All likely will be first-round picks.
LINEBACKERS
This group lacks any incredible talent. Lawrence Timmons of Florida State had a disappointing combine.
Jon Beason of Miami is the top rated backer and Paul Poslusnzy of Penn State is a solid player. He was two-year captain at PSU, a rarity in college football.
Patrick Willis of Ole Miss could sneak into the first round.
DEFENSIVE BACKS
Leon Hall of Michigan has seen his stock rise and fall ever since being handled by USC in the Rose Bowl, but his stock is on the way back up after a 4.43 40 and is currently the top-ranked corner.
Chris Houston of Arkansas, who ran a 4.30 40, is the second-ranked corner and is being compared to Ahmad Carroll, a fellow Razorback.
Needless to say, the draft is not necessarily good at the top of the list. Aaron Ross of Texas, however, may be a standout.
But at safety, Laron Landry put together a fabulous combine with a 4.35 40 and unfortunately will likely be off the board at 16. Reggie Nelson of Florida may be seeing his stock drop after coming into the Combine as the second-ranked safety.
Early Packers draft selection prediction: Marshawn Lynch, RB, California
While Ahman Green may be back this year, he and Lynch could split carries this year while Lynch gives the Green and Gold a long-term solution at the halfback position. Lynch is a solid fit for the zone blocking scheme.
