Wrong timing in “Ocarina“

The relationship that just didnâ??t work

By Sean Quast

When I got to the point where Link met Zelda, I was feeling back to normal. You can tell by how their eyes met that, by the end of the game, they will be making their own little heroes.

Princess Zelda and Link: Two lovers who were destined to be with one another until the fall of Hyrule, right?

That“s what the first few games taught me. There was Link, our hero of old, saving his helpless princess from a horrible monster, with the help of some magical sword and a few other tricks.

Then after Link would defeat all evil, he and his lady friend would always live happily ever after “ at least until the next time Ganondorf reared his ugly pig head.

Then in 1998 along came Link“s new adventure, “Ocarina of Time.” Yet again I was out to save the land and my girl, or so I thought.

As the story progressed I saw Link, the little player, flirting with other girls besides his Zelda. Since when did Link become a player? Why is he helping out that cute little farm girl? Damn, Zelda is going to be pissed when she finds out.

When I got to the point where Link met Zelda, I was feeling back to normal. You can tell by how their eyes met that, by the end of the game, they will be making their own little heroes.

Then the end of the game came around and â?¦ what the hell? They can“t be together because she“s some minor guardian deity now. What the hell is Link supposed to do, live with his horse?

To truly make Hyrule a happy place with happy little trees and what not, Link and Zelda could never be together. The perfect couple had to sacrifice their relationship to make the rest of the world right. This time Link didn“t get the girl, but the rest of the world is in great shape.

Way to take one for the team Link.

Then that insanely long credit sequence rolled, and you saw Link and all his friends, and you thought that maybe he really would be OK. He did have farm girls after all, or that fish girl he“s supposed to marry.

That game taught me that even sometimes the most perfect matches don“t work out. It all comes down to timing. Too late or too soon and the relationship will never work for things far beyond one“s control.

Great distance and opportunities separate people regardless of how much love they think they have. Love cannot sustain our well being alone. Bills have to be paid and one has to eat.

Plus there are other people out there. I think Link could have been very happy living with the farm girl. She may not be as adventurous as Link has been, but now that Link has vanquished the evil from the land, what“s he going to do, fish all day?

Sometimes fate just gets in the way. Happy endings don“t always happen. Sometimes endings are just what they are: the closure of one tale.
