UWM loses with roster devoid of Paulsen, Anderson
By Tim Elliott
With his team playing short-handed, freshman Roman Gentry took over for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men“s basketball team.
The 6-foot-4-inch guard was one rebound shy of recording a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing nine rebounds in the Panthers“ 72-59 loss to the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames Feb. 21.
The loss dropped the Panthers to 8-21 overall and 5-10 in Horizon League play and extends the Panthers“ losing streak to five games.
The Flames“ offense was on fire as UIC had four different players in double figures. The Panthers played without junior Paige Paulsen after he contracted the stomach flu and freshman Kaylan Anderson, suffering from severe bronchitis.
“The guys that were available to play did it for 20-something minutes, but just couldn't do it for 40,” said head coach Rob Jeter. “It came down to them getting some stops defensively and their size was a factor.”
Milwaukee was slow to start, trailing by as much as nine in first 10 minutes of the game. But the Panthers eventually woke up as Gentry drilled back-to-back three pointers to pull the Panthers within one with just under four minutes left in the half.
A well formulated late-half surge gave the Panthers a two-point lead heading into the break.
The Panthers came out of the dressing room poised to play and pushed their lead to seven points in the first five minutes of the half. However the Flames stormed back, taking the lead for good with just under eight minutes left in the game. The Flames doused any chances of a Panthers scoring spree, finishing the game on a 19-5 run.
Next up for the Panthers is the Horizon League tournament. This year, the Panthers will play the role of underdog as they look to get back to the NCAA Tournament.
