Tuesday primaries set scene for Nov. 7

‘Weedstock’ organizer among candidates

Lieutenant Governor

Term: 4 years

Candidates: Jean Hundertmark (R) and Nick Voegeli (R)

Winner to face incumbent Barbara Lawton (D-Inc.) and Leon Todd (Wisconsin Green) in general election.

Jean Hundertmark is a state representative for the 40th Dist. Waupaca County. She was born in Milwaukee and a member of the committees on financial institutions (Chair), health, labor, Medicaid reform and veterans. She has worked on state and local tax limits, making government smaller and more efficient, protecting the rights of adopted children and child abuse prevention. She is endorsed by Mark Green and is a business owner and mother of two.

Nick Voegeli is a retired Navy intelligence officer who works as a certified public accountant in Sun Prairie. He served two terms on the Sun Prairie City Council and more than four years as the deputy state treasurer. He opposes the death penalty and state and local tax limits. He is the father of five, with a sixth on the way and a seventh, whom they are adopting from Guatemala, arriving shortly.

Secretary of State

Term: 4 years

Candidates: Doug La Follette (D-Inc.) and Scot Ross (D)

Winner to face Sandy Sullivan (R) and Michael LaForest (Wisconsin Green) in general election.

Doug La Follette, a 28-year incumbent secretary and former state senator, has worked to make historic public records available online, fought for finance reform, created an office Web site and worked to promote fair elections. Doug holds a doctorate from Columbia University and was a professor of chemistry and environmental science at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha.

Scot Ross is a journalist and former communications director for U.S. Rep. Ron Kind and campaign director for Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager’s first campaign. If elected, he plans to visit high schools across the state to promote civic participation and voter registration. He has a degree in english from the University of Pittsburgh and a master’s from George Washington University.

U.S. Senate

Term: 6 years

Candidates: Herb Kohl (D-Inc.) and Ben Masel (D)

Winner to face Robert Gerald Lorge (R), Rae Vogeler (Wisconsin Green) and Ben Glatzel (I) in general election.

Herb Kohl, owner of the Milwaukee Bucks and former president of Kohl’s Department Store, was born and raised in Milwaukee. He is a three-term incumbent senator with a seat on the Appropriation Committee and has worked to make health care more affordable, fully fund No Child Left Behind and protect Social Security. He supports federal financial aid programs but not a deadline for troop withdrawal in Iraq.

Ben Masel is a 51-year-old organizer of the Great Midwest Marijuana Harvest Festival and Weedstock. He is “pro-choice on everything” according to his MySpace profile. He was sent to jail five years ago for telling two train passengers they did not have to consent to a police search. For his campaign, he only accepted $1 donations.

Milwaukee County District Attorney

Term: 4 years

Candidates: John Chisholm (D) and Larraine McNamara-McGraw (D)

Winner to face Lew Wasserman (I) in general election. Incumbent E. Michael McCann is retiring.

John Chisholm, assistant district attorney, has prosecuted over 60 jury trials and countless court trials and motions including general misdemeanor, domestic violence and felony drug offenders. If elected, he plans to focus crime-fighting resources on violent criminals, remove bad cops with the help of an impartial investigative team and better manage how resources are spent. He graduated from Marquette University and received his law degree at UW-Madison.

Larraine McNamara-McGraw is a veteran civil rights trial attorney and has 17 years of courtroom experience. If elected, she plans to enforce district attorney accountability through disciplinary action, create a task force to create a citywide approach to crime and public safety, provide 24-hour search warrant service for police and partner with local groups to provide mentoring for at-risk kids and first-time offenders. She is a graduate of Marquette University Law School.

Milwaukee County Sheriff

Term: 4 years

Candidates: David A. Clarke (D-Inc.) and Vince Bobot (D)

Winner to face Donald Holt (R) in general election.

David A. Clarke, four-year incumbent, has served over 20 years in the Milwaukee Police Department. He has completed courses on policing terrorism and Domestic Preparedness Training (response to nuclear, biological and chemical threats). He has worked to stop drug trafficking and arrest on-line predators.

Vince Bobot runs the Community Prosecution Program “known drug house initiative” for the city of Milwaukee. He formerly worked for the Milwaukee Police Department from 1971 to 1992 and was appointed by to the Common Council as a municipal judge. He is concerned about increased personal injury accidents, response times falling and threats to the department’s drug unit and witness protection program.

State Assembly Dist. 16

Term: 2 years

Candidates: Leon D. Young (D-Inc.) and Andy Parker (D)

Leon D. Young, a 14-year incumbent legislator, is a former police officer. He is assigned to committees on highway safety, housing, state affairs and tourism. He has worked for child safety in vehicles, civil rights enforcement and firearm registration. He is against the private school choice program. He graduated from Rufus King High School and attended UW-Milwaukee.

Andy Parker runs a bed-and-breakfast near the Concordia neighborhood. If elected, he plans to make himself very accessible to his constituents, work to fight crime, advocate for jobs and promote healthcare accessibility. He is for the voucher program.

Attorney General

Term: 4 years

Candidates: Democrat: Peggy Lautenschlager, inc., and Kathleen Falk; Republican: Paul Bucher and J.B. Van Hollen

Winner of each party will face the other in Nov. 7 general election.

If You Vote

To register to vote on Election Day, residents must bring a form of ID with name and current Milwaukee County address. Wisconsin driver’s license is preferred with current address but utility bills, paychecks, leases or bank statements are accepted with the address listed.
