Being the leader of a contending volleyball team is a pretty good job. People look up to you, rarely do you ride the bench in games and everyone knows that you are the cat's pajamas.
So when junior Leanne Felsing was named Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week, an already large pile of success was given a nice addition of street credibility.
“It is nice to know that Milwaukee is getting recognized,” Felsing said.
Felsing led the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's volleyball team to victory in the 'Bama Bash, a tournament held annually by Southeastern Conference stalwart Alabama.
When the invitational was complete, UWM was the champion.
Felsing racked up an eye-popping 44 assists, 11 digs, five kills and two blocks. Her assists paved the way for a .352 hitting performance against host Alabama, an excellent mark.
“In Alabama, the team really showed up to play,” Felsing said. “We played as a team, and because of that, we were able to showcase what we can do. Everything just meshed together. The passing was great, the hitting was unstoppable, and we used our block to stop our opponents. We knew what we had to do, and we did it.”
Carrying the team into play on Friday, Felsing racked up a total of 62 assists in two victories over Ball State and Mercer. Leanne's stellar play validated her nomination as the Offensive Player of the Week.
Already the university's all-time leader in triple-doubles with six, Felsing is on pace to make a run at the records of kills and digs. Felsing will be looking to add on to all of her stats, as well the all important "W" for the squad.
If Leanne Felsing's stat-building ends up as the major contributor to UWM volleyball success, she will bolster her status as the bees knees.
