The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women’s soccer team claimed second place in the Husky Invitational hosted by the University of Washington Sept. 3 by handing the host Huskies their first loss of the season, scoring two late goals.
Sophomores Beth Steuer and Bailey Briggs each tallied goals against the Huskies late in the second half. Steuer buried a 10-yard blast into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal. Briggs notched the insurance goal in the 74th minute off of a rebound shot to put the nail into the coffin.
“Washington has some big, powerful forwards and a good attacking midfielder,” said head coach Mike Moynihan. “I was happy with our ability to limit their scoring chances, another thing we were able to pick up from our game Friday.”
Sophomore Erin Kane recorded five saves for the Panthers in the shutout, her first of the season.
In the first game of the tournament, the Panthers took on the defending national champions, the University of Portland. Milwaukee went into halftime with a 2-1 lead but gave up two second-half goals to fall to the Pilots, 3-2.
Portland’s Megan Rapinoe proved why she is a Preseason All-American as she scored the Pilots’ first two goals and assisted on the third.
“Despite the fact that we were playing the defending national champions, we came here expecting to get two results,” Moynihan said. “We played well, but we are still disappointed with how the game ended.”
Portland drew first blood with Rapinoe’s goal in the 11th minute, but a pair of freshmen came through for the Panthers. Louise Vraney scored on an assist from Erin Kreuser to tie the game 1. Fellow freshman Kate Megna put the Panthers ahead on an assist from junior Amanda Winn. Megna got up into the air and headed Winn’s free kick past Portland’s keeper.
