For those of you who donâ??t know what PDA is, listen up. It can range from sex in public to handholding down the sidewalk. Weâ??re talking making out, sucking on someoneâ??s neck, anything and everything someone should be doing at home.
Many experts agree that mid-December through February is the season for breakups. Then why do I constantly see lovers kissing all over each other everywhere I go?
With Valentine“s Day a few days away, the natural instinct for lovers to get their freak on in public can piss you off more than ever. But not everyone feels the way I do. Some people actually enjoy the sight of watching a PG-rated porno unfolding right in front of their eyes.
What is it?
For those of you who don“t know what Public Displays of Affection (PDA) are, listen up. It can range from sex in public to handholding down the sidewalk. We“re talking making out, sucking on someone“s neck, anything and everything someone should be doing at home.
But not all PDA is physical. The most atrocious and stomach turning form: love mush. Let me explain.
Meet Adam and Eve. Eve says, “I“ll miss you all day, Adam. I love you!” Adam replies, “Yeah Eve, you“re pretty cute. I love you, too!” This usually turns into an “I love you more” spat, after which we have the pleasure of watching these two make out before they depart. And they say long distance relationships are bad â?¦
Who“s on the offense?
As I said, not everyone is grossed out or offended by PDA. My friend Emily, a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee junior, explains why PDA is hot on both sides of the fence.
“I think it“s cute when a couple is kissing,” she said. “They“re expressing their love and I think that“s a good thing. Seeing PDA in action doesn“t gross me out at all. With all this fighting that goes on constantly, it“s nice to see couples in love.”
When asked if she thinks PDA is inappropriate, she told me that she doesn“t feel guilty.
“I“ve finally met the man of my dreams and I want the whole world to know about it. I don“t care what other people think; when we kiss I don“t notice anyone else but him.”
So who“s not into PDA?
When it comes to these not-so-private displays of affection, you can“t categorize who will be OK with PDA and who won“t. Jena Lapacek, a UW-Parkside student, is in a long-term relationship with Mr. Right.
“It doesn“t matter if I“m a single or a taken, PDA is still gross and I don“t want to see it,” she said.
What is socially acceptable?
When it comes to the public scene, less is definitely enough. Think of it this way: Don“t do anything you wouldn“t want your mother to see. If she“d lecture you, don“t do it.
