Valentine“s Day is a day to express your love and appreciation for someone special in your life. Whether that someone special is your significant other, best friend, parent or grandparent, Valentine“s Day can still be celebrated in many different ways.
The way that many people like to show their love is through food and on Feb. 14, nothing says “I love you” like dessert.
After you have devoured that homemade dinner or savory meal shared with your loved one downtown, I suggest you pass on the dessert menu. Why not venture out and find a dessert that will satisfy the both of you all the while getting out in Milwaukee and trying new places?
I truly hope the following list will entice your taste buds and impress that special someone on this amorous holiday.
Swig
1227 N. Water St.; 431-7944
There is nothing more romantic than sharing fondue for two ($12.50). At Swig, the fondue is irresistibly romantic. The fondue pot, which comes adorned with whole strawberries, pieces of chocolate chip cookies, cubes of cheesecake and pear wedges is the ultimate way to end your Valentine“s Day evening.
Swig“s atmosphere is also very lovely. Low lighting and candles throughout the entire restaurant makes this a perfect spot for gazing into each other“s eyes.
Elliot“s Bistro
2321 N. Murray Ave., 278-1488
What would be the ultimate Valentine“s Day gift? For many ladies, it would be a trip to the sensual city, Paris. Why not take a mini and minimal cost trip to this city and sample elegant Parisian desserts at Elliot“s Bistro. The cheesecake ($7.95) is delicious and creamy. The strawberries that cover the entire cake give it that classic pure taste. If you want to feel as if you are in Paris then you must order the Crème Brule ($5.95). Nothing will compare once you taste this creamy pot of caramel and caramelized sugar. Bon appetit!
Carnivore
742 N. Milwaukee St.; 223-2200
It may be hard getting a reservation at Milwaukee“s newest hotspot, but who says you can“t take dessert to go? Or ordering your dessert at the bar is always intimate; it gives you a chance to whisper sweet nothings into her ear. There is no need to debate about dessert because I can tell you that if you do not order the chocolate lava cake ($7) you will be missing out on pure perfection. Slicing your fork into the cake and it erupts molten hot chocolate that is too good to be true. I would order two because you will not want to share this--no matter how in love you are.
Café Hollander
2608 N. Downer St., 963-6366
This recent addition to Downer Avenue is something that should not be missed. Ask for a cozy table for two and you are on your way to romance.
The best item on the dessert menu that I have tried has been the ice cream sandwich ($8.50). Recommended by all of the servers, this ice cream and mini cranberry-almond waffle masterpiece looks more like the leaning tower of Pisa. Sweet vanilla ice cream is layered between mini Belgian waffles and topped with a heap of whipped cream, caramel and white chocolate. This treat is a perfect dessert for two people in love.
Don“t assume that you“ll get a spot at these classy restaurants. Always play it safe. Always make a reservation. Just think how impressed your date will be when you proudly tell the host/ess, “Reservation for Mr. Smith.” Trust me, you“ll thank me later.
