: â??How do you tell your significant other â??This relationship is so over.â? Ignoring, of course, the obvious sin of breaking up with someone on Valentineâ??s Day, there are a number of subtle ways to getting the point across without actually saying the words.â?

The typical Valentines Day with a special someone goes something like this: flowers, chocolate, dinner. Of course, each couple puts their unique spin on the day, but that is the industry standard.

What happens, however, if your message is less “I love you,” and more, “This isn“t working”? How do you tell your significant other “This relationship is so over”? Ignoring, of course, the obvious sin of breaking up with someone on Valentine“s Day, there are a number of subtle ways to getting the point across without actually saying the words.

Valentine“s Day creates a lot of pressure on relationships which are not destined to last, so a V-Day break up might be the ironic ending to a dwindling coupling. Setting the scene for your big night is almost as important as the entertainment you choose to do the talking for you. You want to make sure that at the end of the evening, the new plasma screen TV you received for Christmas is still in one piece, and your apartment is not on fire. Going out for dinner is too much of a tease, so staying in with simple comfort food is a good idea.

Probably the best way to send your anti-love message is with the help of a carefully chosen movie. In choosing a movie, you want to make sure your viewing partner clearly gets the message that “it“s over.” There are a number of qualified movies ranging from subtle to the more palpable.

An obvious and recent film that would more than likely get the point across because of the title and ending is “The Break Up,” starring Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn. If you have not seen this film and you care about how it ends, skip down to the next paragraph. This movie would work perfectly because the movie is about breaking up, and at the end of the film, the couple does not reunite. Hopefully, by the end of this film, your significant other will have an idea that something is amiss in the relationship, and the two of you are destined for a Vaughn-Aniston type endingâ?¦it does not hurt that they broke up in real life as well.

A less obvious and more metaphorical movie to depict the ending of your liaison is Martin Scorsese“s “The Departed.” In true Scorsese form, everyone ends up dead, or in “relationship-speak,” all the relationships are broken. This movie might take a more philosophical viewing to get the point across, but the lack of romance as the major theme in “The Departed” is clear to anyone.

So if the Valentine“s break up is the path you plan on taking, either of the two aforementioned films would be ideal candidates to help you forever ruin V-Day for your significant other. Just promise to use a little tact, you do not want to be known as that guy/girl.
