The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s and women’s track team’s both got off on the right foot in 2007 after finishing second and third, respectively, at the Division I Invite in Kenosha.

The men’s team notched seven wins and 153 points to help pave the way for their second-place finish in the season opener. Marquette won the event with 194 points while the other Division I school, DePaul, placed third in the six-team field with 109.5.

Junior Justin Bohler led the way for the Panthers, winning the 55-meter hurdles and taking fourth in the high jump. His time of 7.74 in the hurdles is good for the fifth-best time in school history.

Sophomore Adam Schleis finished right behind him in 7.77 for second place and also tied the seventh-best time in school history. Schleis also cleared 6-2 while freshman Quinn Mongoven was second with a height of 6-9 ¾.

Junior Darren Cole took first in the triple jump, third in the 200m and fourth in the long jump. Milwaukee also placed first in the shot put as junior Larry Ehrhorn won that event and senior Nick Wichert finished second. Wichert also placed second in the weight throw where he just missed the school record with a distance of 55-9 ¾, extending his personal record that was already second in school history.

The Panthers finished the successful day off with a pair of wins in the relays, setting a school record in the 4x200m. UWM posted a time of 1:31.21 to clip the previous record of 1:31.61.

For the women, sophomore Beth Zimmerman won two events and took second in another to help lead the Panthers to a third-place finish.

Zimmerman captured two of UWM’s five wins on the day, taking first in both the triple jump and long jump. In the triple jump, she leapt 37-10, posting the second-best jump in school history and missing the school record by just 1 ¼ inches.

Sophomore Kicha Cary took second at 36-1 ¼, while freshman Regina Pierce was third with a jump of 36-0 ¾. Pierce’s leap put her 10th in school history in the event, joining Zimmerman and Cary on the list.

In the long jump, Zimmerman and Cary both cleared 17-6 ¾, with Zimmerman scoring top honors. Cary’s jump was a personal record. Freshman Emily Budde was third with a jump 16-1 ½, just ahead of Pierce who finished in fourth at 15-10 ¼. Zimmerman also placed second in the 200m, finishing in 26.83, just ahead of Budde in third in 27.06. Budde finished off a very successful first college meet, taking third in the 400m in 1:01.54.

The Panthers scored 131 points on the day, finishing just eight points back of second-place DePaul (139 points). Marquette won the event with 194.

Milwaukee returns to action this Saturday (Jan.28) at the Madison Elite Invitational. Action gets underway at 10 a.m.
