The emergency University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Student Association meeting was brief Sunday night as Student Appropriation Committee large grant allocations were approved for next semester.

Student organization requests were heard during the SAC large-grant allocations and appropriations meeting on the weekend of Nov. 17. Any amount in excess of $750 must receive SA Senate approval.

Quorum was not met for the Dec. 3 Senate meeting; therefore, an emergency meeting was called for by several senators so that the student organization funding could be allocated for next semester.

The funding was approved along with the agenda, and the meeting was swiftly adjourned.

“SAC allocations needed to be approved so that money can be used next semester,” said Kyle Duerstein, SA director of legislative affairs.

Senate bylaws indicate that emergency meetings are for the sole purpose of approving SAC or Senate Finance Committee activities, or for taking up items requiring Senate action due to timelines out of the control of the Senate.

The only other item dealt with during the meeting was the fate of suspended SA Speaker Russell Rueden.

He remains a Senate member, with 10 demerit points from his absences at meetings. Twelve demerits will result in an automatic loss of an offending Senate members’ seat.

One more absence will expel Rueden from the SA Senate, though any Senate position loss can be appealed to the Senate Oversight and Rules Committee.

All agenda items from the Dec. 3 meeting will be dealt with at the next Senate meeting after winter break.
