The winter holidays are finally approaching. After a grueling week of final exams, papers and presentations, we’ll go home to our families and friends and enjoy the month-long break.

But for hundreds of homeless and poor, the holidays serve as a reminder of their bleak situation.

If you have the willingness, consider donating some of your clothes, food or time to brighten the holidays of someone less fortunate.

Food/Clothing/Toy Drives

Drop Your Pants at Chipotle

At all Milwaukee-area Chipotle restaurants every Wednesday until Dec. 20, customers may bring an article or articles of clothing (in good condition) in exchange for a free burrito, bol, salad or tacos. All clothing will be donated to the Neighborhood House of Milwaukee.

Hunger Task Force

Food donations are needed to prepare meal donations for needy families. Items for holiday meals are especially needed, including frozen turkeys, stuffing, gravy, sweet potatoes and apples, as well as basics like butter and cheese. For locations and more information, visit: hungertaskforce.org.

Holiday Volunteering

SHARE Wisconsin

From now through Christmas, volunteers may help by organizing and transporting holiday dinners for families in need. You may also help out by answering phones and taking orders. For more information, visit: sharewi.org.

Bay View Community Center

People are needed to help bake, package or deliver cookies for low-income seniors, help pick up gifts from schools and organizations for kids and seniors, and to wrap/deliver presents for senior citizens. For more information, contact Linda Nieft at 482-1000.

Holiday Red Kettle Campaign

Become one of the infamous bell ringers throughout Milwaukee by helping the Salvation Army raise money this holiday season. For more information, visit ringbells.org. Or, to host a kettle from your own home, visit onlineredkettle.com.

Bethesda Community Senior Citizens Center Annual Christmas Celebration

Help older adults celebrate the season during the Bethesda Community’s Senior Center Christmas party on Thursday, Dec. 21. Contact Worthington Hortman at 445-3109 or bethesdasrcenter@tds.net for more information.

Wisconsin Humane Society

Be a dog walker! Get some exercise, have fun and help out someone without the time or tolerance for the cold. For more information, visit: volunteermilwaukee.org/opinfo.php?id=2751

Thanks to Amanda O’Donnell of the Center for Volunteerism and Student Leadership and volunteermilwaukee.org for the information.
