The holidays should be a time for reminiscing, eating too much and spending time with family. But nine times out of 10, we’re running around stressed trying to find so-and-so the “perfect” gift. Especially if you’re romantically involved, picking out the right present can determine your relationship’s fate. Here are some unique ideas to ensure your status until at least Valentine’s Day.
For the girl
Men may be harder to shop for, but women tend to be pickier. Depending on the lady, she might get offended if you pick something “not her.”
Cheap gifts:
Finding low-budget gifts for women can be difficult. Gift baskets from Bath and Body Works are nice and smell good. If you’re artistic or mechanically inclined, painting, sculpting or anything that showcases your talent and effort is sentimental and proves you’re creative.
Moderately-priced:
Anything from Victoria’s Secret would be appropriate. A comfy robe or silk P.J.’s are great (lingerie for more intimate couples). Also, spa certificates are reasonably priced, as you can tailor them to your budget. Treating her to a professional massage or manicure or pedicure will cost around $40 to $70 depending on the spa.
Money is no object:
Women have a secret list of what they really want for Christmas. They drop hints, i.e., talk about how a friend got one and they’re so jealous, left the Web page on your computer, etc. Finding a surefire gift isn’t that hard, but in this case, it might cost a bit.
Anything designer, i.e. Coach or Louis Vuitton, most women should love. A Coach wallet will cost around $200, but you’re guaranteed to get an A+ on your Christmas gift. Also, jewelry from Tiffany & Co. is music to her ears. “Return to Tiffany” bracelets and necklaces start at $100.
For the guy
Men can be pretty hard to shop for anytime of the year, not to mention most of what they pick out is way too expensive (PlayStation 3, anyone?). Here are a few creative ideas:
Cheap
If you’re low on cash this winter, or just started dating someone, baked goods are the way to go. As long as it isn’t burnt or hard as a rock, men are thrilled when any type of food is thrown their way. Try making a gift basket with cookies or banana bread, and include items like his favorite type of coffee, beer, a winter hat, etc. Movies are also a good alternative — not too personal but still show you care.
Moderately-priced:
Video games are a sure bet when it comes to guys. Have you met a man who doesn’t love games? Whether it’s the PS2 or XBOX, your manly man most likely has one system (or a bunch). Guitar Hero II recently came out for PS2 (at $79.99 with the guitar or $49.99 without the instrument).
If he’s more of a sophisticated guy, a nice sweater, a fancy bottle of wine or a case of his favorite beer might suit him better.
Spoil him rotten:
Typically, the more you like a guy, the more you should spend on a gift. If you’re really into him, sporting event or concert tickets are appropriate. For a more conservative route, a pricier bottle of cologne, a watch, jewelry or anything leather (jacket, wallet, etc.) aren’t too conventional.
Just remember, purchasing a gift ultimately depends on the person you’re buying it for. Drop small questions or pay attention to what they look at while shopping. But for the completely aloof, a gift card doesn’t hurt either.
