An advertising slogan can make or break a brand’s selling goals. Most of us remember classics such as Wendy’s “Where’s the beef?” and “Just do it” by Nike, but less successful slogans can be quite memorable as well. Here are some ad slogans that, looking back, may not have been the best choice.
Slogan: “Bring out your best” Brand: Budweiser Light
Year: early to mid-1980s
I hardly think that drinking crappy light beer is bringing out anybody’s “best.” Photo source: zianet.com/spencer/budweiser106b.jpg
Slogan: “I want hot stuff.”
Brand: Chef Boyardee
Year: 1986
Something is not quite right about young children singing Donna Summer’s song “Hot Stuff” to express desire for canned pasta. Good thing the Chef Boyardee executives decided to leave out other lyrics of the song, which include: “Wanna share my love with a warm-blooded lover. Wanna bring a wild man back home.”

Slogan: “When the cheese starts flowing, Kraft gets your noodle going.”
Brand: Kraft Macaroni & Cheese Year: Unknown
This is a perfect example of advertising executives with their minds in the gutter.
Slogan: “Plop, Plop, Fizz, Fizz, Oh What a Relief It Is!”
Brand: Alka Seltzer
Year: 1970s
This product is used to treat heartburn and provide stomachache relief. The slogan refers to the sound of Alka Seltzer tabs being dropped into a glass of water and then dissolving. It definitely had that “eew” factor for its similarity to less pleasant sound effects.
Slogan: “Lipsmackin’ Thirstquenchin’ Acetastin’ Motivatin’ Goodbuzzin’ Cooltalkin’ Highwalkin’ Fastlivin’ Evergivin’ Coolfizzin’...”
Brand: Pepsi
Year: 1973
Huh?
Slogan: “You Need It Because You're Weak”
Brand: Tango
Year: 1998
Tango is a fruity, carbonated soft drink sold primarily in the UK and the most popular slogan used for it referred to getting “Tangoed.” This wacky brand evoked some controversy when one commercial featured an orange-clad man slapping people in the face. Lesson learned: showing abuse in commercials and creating a slogan that verbally abuses consumers probably isn’t a good idea.
