Six student organizations of different cultures met last Wednesday night for a potluck and conversation about improving the campus climate at our university.

The article, “Let me conversate with you,” written by Devon Marie Wiesand in the last issue of the UWM Post was a topic that received heavy discussion from all organizations present.

We are not only disappointed in the Post as a whole in deciding to publish such racist trash, but are also enraged that a person with such a mentality of hate and intolerance not only has a place at this university but also has a place to publicize it within a school newspaper.

Devon has directly attacked all students that speak with their own language and Ebonics that differ from the Oxford Dictionary. This is an urban university of academic freedom and absolutely every person of every creed, origin and dialect has a right to be here and contribute immensely to the table of educational discussion.

Whether you like it or not Devon, we live in a society of many different peoples, and if you decide to be ignorant of the contributions our different cultures have to offer whether it is offered in slang or not, than you need to keep it to your own head or get off of this campus immediately.

Your racism and ridicule has no place here. You may have come from the boondocks where everyone speaks “correct English,” but to call the diverse students from Milwaukee “backwards, ignorant, illiterate, inner-city trash” needs to be condemned and prosecuted by the administration.

All of the organizations that represent Asian, Latino, African American and American Indian feel that you do not deserve a place at this campus.

And then you say that the kids (those who have a right to speak anyway they please outside of class) in the Union — those that “hang out and gossip to get their degrees” — is absolutely hypocritical. You contribute nothing but gossip and opinions to this campus with your weekly fluff “Sex” article dealing with topics as deep as “do these jeans make my labia look big?”

The multicultural students at this university will not tolerate your own ignorance and hypocrisy and we call now for you to stop writing for the Post and keep your hateful opinions to yourself. There is a history of racism on this campus that has made the climate hostile and your contribution will not be forgotten or forgiven.
