Favre, Packers still worth watching

After a few tough losses, the likelihood that the Green Bay Packers will make the playoffs suddenly looks slimmer than the chance of Koren Robinson designating a driver.
Although the Green and Gold might be missing out on the postseason for the second year in a row, now is certainly not the time for fans to pack it in. There are still plenty of storylines to follow in Titletown before the Packers close their season with a shutout victory over the Bears on Dec. 31.
Of course, the biggest story line of all is Brett Favre.
Every week, fans get the chance to watch history being made, as Favre continues to extend his consecutive starts streak. In addition to that, fans get to watch a future hall-of-famer give everything he has to the game of football, playing the quarterback position like nobody ever has or ever will again.
In the event that the streak — which, health permitting, will reach 237 straight regular season games by year’s end — is of no interest to you, Favre has a couple of other records in his sights.
Dan Marino’s 420 career touchdown passes are just a few bombs to Ruvell Martin and Chris Francies away for the graying legend. Unfortunately, the same can be said about George Blanda’s NFL record 277 interceptions. For better or worse, some records are on the verge of shattering.
Even if record-breaking performances aren’t your cup of tea, just watch Favre because he’s … well … he’s Favre.
The “Will he retire? Won’t he retire?” game the media plays every offseason regarding Favre’s future is overblown and annoying, but in a sense it really is a big deal. Few quarterbacks in NFL annals have played at such a consistent level over such a long period of time as Favre. In fact, none have.
So, as sick as everyone is of hearing the “r” word in connection with No. 4, this year really could be your last chance to see one of the best ever.
Favre’s kinda like that crazy old Great Grandpa that your parents tell you to be extra nice to because this year could be his last Christmas, and then he ends up surviving about 16 more Christmases.
Sure the whole charade gets a bit tiresome, and you get a little sick of having to help him up off his rocking chair every three minutes to go to the bathroom, but in the end, at that 17th Christmas, you really wish you were a little nicer to the guy.
The moral: even if the Packers are out of playoff contention and the season becomes completely meaningless, watch the Packers for Brett Favre. Watch him play for as long as you can, because, believe it or not, he will retire someday.
And trust me, when he does, you’ll miss him.
