“There’s not much accountability locally; the group would aim to bring that accountability to those elected officials.” – Jason Haas, Students For Clean Government creator
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will expand its horizons next semester with a new organization titled Students For Clean Government, a political program aimed at finding answers to the many questions that surround state, local and university-based governments.
The idea behind Students For Clean Government is to be a source of information and analysis of political happenings. Analysis and research will be posted online for students to view for free. The program aims to act as a monitor for authority figures whose actions are not regularly assessed.
“There’s not much accountability locally; the group would aim to bring that accountability to those elected officials,” said Jason Haas, creator of the organization.
One area of interest at the local level includes Sheriff David Clarke, as well as university student government organizations, according to Haas.
The organization is not partisan or ideological, nor would it put on any demonstrations. Those involved would be limited to the use of media reports and the analysis of political records to publish articles.
“It is strictly objective,” Haas said.
Haas said he visualizes the program as a blog, running very much like an online magazine. Haas said he wants to act as the editor and publisher in order to ensure that the information added would be factual. Contributors would most likely meet with Haas before they are granted permission to post.
Students For Clean Government plans to begin functioning as early as January.
