There is nothing sweeter than getting a win on Senior Day and that is just what the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers women’s soccer team did with their 1-0 victory over the Colorado College Tigers Friday at Engelmann Field.
Sophomore defender Amanda Winn scored the game’s only goal in the 14th minute and freshman Erin Lake continued her impressive season when she posted her school record ninth shutout.
The Panthers (10-4-3) extended their unbeaten streak to nine games (8-0-1), while the Tigers (7-7-3) fell to .500 on the year.
Milwaukee controlled the momentum and played a very solid game on its way to closing out the regular season with a win.
“The first half was some of the best soccer we played all season,” head coach Michael Moynihan said. “We moved the ball well, created a number of chances and got a nice goal from Amanda (Winn).”
Winn lofted a shot from 30 yards out that found the back of the net, off the finger tips of Tigers goalkeeper Geneva Sills, for her second goal of the season. In the first half, the Panthers forced a number of scoring opportunities with two shots hitting the crossbar.
The second half saw the Panthers come out aggressive, putting constant pressure on the Tigers defense. In the 72nd minute, the Tigers nearly got the equalizer but freshman goalkeeper Erin Kane made a great save to salvage the lead. For the match, the Panthers forced six more corner kicks (9-3) and six more shots (14-8).
Kane’s nine shutouts this season surpass the eight by Kathy Hoverman in 1998 and Liz Ulicki in 1999. She already doubled the previous school record for shutouts by a freshman of four. The St. Charles, Ill., native improved her record to 9-4-3 this season and lowered her goals against average to 0.72.
“Erin had such a phenomenal year,” Moynihan said. “She came in with such big shoes after Kerri St. Aubin graduated, but she has been able to do everything we have asked of her. It’s good to have a freshman goalkeeper that’s this good.”
Seniors Janice McGann, Nicole Moti, Andrea Kramer, Katie Campion, Rebecca England, Kitty Montgomery and Elizabeth Chudy played their final home game for the Panthers.
The day was extra special to Chudy because she made her season debut after suffering a knee injury in the preseason.
UWM returns to action at next week’s Horizon League Tournament in Green Bay. The Panthers are the top seed and will open up with the yet-to-be decided eighth-seeded team Thursday at 11 a.m.
