Pell Grants kept steady

The U.S. Senate on Thursday approved legislation to finance several federal agencies that would keep the maximum Pell Grant at $4,050. Senate and House of Representative leaders will meet this month to try to craft a compromise between several parallel bills.

Urban forum to focus on education issues

The 9th Annual Urban Forum will focus on language, education and other matters in a day-long conference. This year's forum will focus on the 1974 Lau v. Nichols decision. Darder's morning keynote address will be “Linguistic Genocide: The Racialization of Language and the Empire of Capital” in the Union, Wisconsin Room, at 8:30 a.m. Discussions focusing on Native American, Hmong and Latino cultural and linguistic issues will also be held. Darder's evening keynote address will be “The Struggle for Bilingual Education: Forging a New Movement” in the Union, Wisconsin Room, at 6:30 p.m. The forum is sponsored by the School of Education.

Mentoring center to hold food drive

The Peer Mentoring Center is holding a food drive to help Milwaukee’s hungry by seeking non-perishable food items donations. Food will be donated to Second Harvest Food Bank.
