Northwestern defeats women swimmers; divers take first

Freshman 200 individual medley swimmer improves record time

The Northwestern Wildcats turned out to be a persistent nemesis for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women’s swimming and diving team, as they took first place Sunday in the Northwestern Relays after defeating the swim team in Friday’s meet, 158-81.

The defeat does not make the weekend unsuccessful for UWM’s squads, though. There were several first- and second-place finishes by swimmers in Friday’s meet, and the diving team took first overall in the UIC Diving Invitational on Sunday.

On Friday, junior Lindsay Caldwell finished first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.60 and second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:25.14.

Freshman Molly Finn improved her own UWM freshman record in the 200 individual medley to 2:11.32 while placing third in the event.

Senior Erin Blemberg fared well for the diving team, placing third in the one-meter board and fourth in the three-meter.

Blemberg and her diving teammates dominated the five-team UIC Diving Invitational on Sunday. The Panther divers scored 117 points, while the runner-up was Northwestern with 74. Blemberg and junior Emily Duesler placed third and fourth in the three-meter event, and fourth and third in the one-meter board, respectively.

The swimming team finished fourth out of five squads in the Northwestern Relays, scoring 138 points. Northwestern won the event with 212.

Third place was a theme for UWM, as they took third in the 300 backstroke relay, 400 medley, 400 free relays and 300 fly relay.

Oone group of swimmers was able to break away from the plague of third-place finishes. Senior Julie Olson, juniors Bridget Fargen and Stephanie Karis and freshman Finn teamed up to place second in the 400-meter medley.

The swimming and diving team will take on Wheaton College on the road Friday at 4:30 p.m.
