Matt Schmidt, 20
Favorite professor: Jim Lewis, ethnic studies
“He’s been around, so you know he knows what he is talking about.”
Schmidt mentioned one fun experiment ethnic studies instructor Jim Lewis conducted: He held a string with a paper clip above his hand to show that he could use his mind to control the direction the string would move. Schmidt said this taught him something about having unconscious attitudes.
“We may think about something one way, but we control our minds more than we know,” Schmidt said. “We use our minds to pass judgment.”
He said the course is teaching him to listen even more to what people have to say.
Jonella Landry, 19
Favorite professor: Ayumi Sawada, teaching assistant
“She keeps repeating things until she makes sure we got it.”
Landry likes her teaching assistant for Japanese because of her lighthearted demeanor.
“She will hang out with us after class,” Landry said. “She is very easy to talk to.”
Carl Schulz, 20
Favorite professor: Mark Ethridge, political science
“He makes a clear point about how to apply science to something that may not seem science-related.”
Schulz said his political science professor, Mark Ethridge, is good at emphasizing the value of political science research. Because of Ethridge, he is now very interested in going into research himself.
Val Erato, 20
Favorite professor: Kristen Terwelp, creative writing
“She learned everyone's name the first day of class.”
Erato’s creative writing instructor, Kristen Terwelp, made her feel comfortable because she shared things about her personal life with the class and shared her writing.
“It makes me feel not so shy in class,” Erato said. “I don’t have a problem with raising my hand and asking questions, whereas before I was hesitant.”
