After 14 days off, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men’s and women’s cross country teams seemed rusty as they finished 27th and 34th, respectively, at the NCAA Pre-Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind.
Leading the way for the men was senior Josh Nygren, who finished the course with a time of 24:56 for a 76th-place finish.
Nygren watched many runners cross the finish line before finally seeing one of his teammates. The 130th spot belonged to teammate junior Nate Weiland, who finished with a time of 25:28.
After Weiland, junior Ben Uphoff crossed six seconds later in 139th place, and sophomore Nick Hawley crossed eight seconds later in 147th.
The women’s team also struggled, finishing 34th out of the 35 teams competing. Coming across the finish line first for the women was sophomore Angie Huebner in 117th place. She finished the 6,000-meter course in a time of 22:16. Huebner had not run since Sept. 24.
Behind Huebner was sophomore Holly Nearman, with a 164th-place finish and a time of 22:48 and junior Kourtney Nault with a 193rd-place finish and a time of 23:14. Just like Huebner, both Nault and Nearman had not run since Sept. 24.
Both the men’s and women’s teams look to rebound when they run at the Horizon League Championships Oct. 29. The event is hosted by Wright State.
