Freshman goalkeeper records fourth straight shutout

“We were pressing and pressing, but it didn’t fall for us.”
– Coach Louis Bennett

The game between the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers and the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames ended in a scoreless tie after a total of 45 shots on goal, including 25 by UWM.

The tie brings UWM’s record to 7-2-4 overall and 3-1-1 in Horizon League play. UIC is now 6-3-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the Horizon League.

“We couldn’t finish,” UWM coach Louis Bennett said. “They did have a couple of chances, but we had two clear-cut opportunities inside the six-yard box. We were pressing and pressing, but it didn’t fall for us.”

Not only did the Panthers and Flames play through a scoreless 90 minutes of regulation time, they fought another two 10-minute sudden-death overtimes without a goal.

The lack of a score is a bit deceiving, as there was plenty of action around the goal areas. Each team had their chances throughout the game, and UWM did especially in the final overtime, out-shooting UIC 6-0.

In the final minute of the match, Sophomore Zeke Dombrowski crossed a ball to the six-yard box, where an open senior Kyle Zenoni headed the cross directly into the hands of UIC goalkeeper Jeff Engelbrect.

Zenoni led UWM with eight shots, two on goal. Pavle Dundjer led UIC with nine shots. Five of his shots were part of the eight saves by UWM freshman goalkeeper Grant Fernstrum, who notched his fourth straight shutout. His scoreless streak is now at 412:44 minutes, which ranks fifth all-time in UWM history.

The team used the match as an opportunity to benefit those affected by Hurricane Katrina. UWM players wore blue jerseys with an American Red Cross emblem. The jerseys were then auctioned off at the end of the match, raising $6,795.

The Panthers continue their schedule Sunday afternoon at No. 22 Northern Illinois with a kickoff scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
