Southern Indiana newspaper now a public forum
University of Southern Indiana President Ray Hoops designated The Shield, the student newspaper, a public forum, the Student Press Law Center reported.
The statement, which was signed on Oct. 4, entitles The Shield to the highest form of First Amendment protection, including the right to make all content decisions and the authority to do so without advanced administrative approval.
The U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in June that student collegiate publications can be limited to the same type of censorship if the publication receives funding from the university.
The Shield is the second newspaper to be designated as a public forum after the court’s ruling.

The award was named for Ernest Spaights and are given to those who made significant, enduring and campus-wide contributions to UWM’s growth and development.

Haglund, professor emeritus of geography; Haig Khatchadourian, professor emeritus of philosophy; Richard Norris, data administrator; Richard W. Perlman, professor emeritus of economics; Leon M. Schur, professor emeritus of economics; Peter Watson-Boone, director emeritus of the UWM libraries.
Men’s basketball tips off in two weeks
The exhibition season for the UWM Panthers men’s basketball team will begin on Wednesday, Nov. 2, against the UW-Parkside Rangers at the U.S. Cellular Arena.

The team, which was overwhelming picked by Horizon League head coaches to win the league, will play at 8 p.m.
