The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women’s soccer team is still undefeated in conference play this season thanks to a 1-1 tie against rival Wright State Raiders Sunday at Engelmann Field.
The Panthers, whose lone goal was scored by sophomore Amanda Winn, came early in the second half, but that was all UWM could collect against the Raider defense.
Winn scored off of a Pam Shipway foul and the resulting free kick, just outside the penalty area. Winn then blasted the ball past Wright State goalkeeper Steph Comisar from about 75 feet out to tie the game at 1-1.
The Panthers had several scoring opportunities to put them ahead, including two goals called back by offside penalties, but the team’s six total offside penalties for the game hurt their chances of winning.
Junior Molly Duffy scored one of the goals called back by penalty when she received a long pass in the 82nd minute, beating Comisar. Duffy had another close offside penalty called on her during the first overtime, but she had not yet received the ball.
Despite Wright State’s early goal by Lindsay Ferrau that came from a free kick by Megan Mattioda, UWM out-shot the Raiders 17-9. While the Panthers held a slight edge in the first half, out-shooting Wright State 8-6, they held Wright State to only three shots on goal in the second half, compared with the Panthers’ nine.
The goal by Wright State ended freshman goalkeeper Erin Kane’s three-game shutout streak.
“We had the upper hand in the beginning, but Wright State neutralized what we were trying to do by not letting our outside midfielders get involved,” head coach Michael Moynihan said.
The Panthers will host Youngstown State on Friday at 4 p.m. at Engelmann Field before heading off to Detroit for a game on Sunday that at 11 a.m.
