The number of students at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee using bus passes and satellite parking lots has soared to new heights this semester because of rising gas prices and limited on-campus parking.

As of Oct. 4, 16,493 students have picked up their fall semester UPass. This accounts for 62.8 percent of those eligible for the semester-long bus pass.

“That is a record number of pick-ups in the history of UPass,” said Joe Caruso, spokesman for the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS).

The past record was just under 60 percent of eligible students. This semester’s use represents an increase of more than 20 percent compared with this time five years ago, Caruso said.

There is no way to determine exactly how many people who have picked up their UPasses actually use them, but generally the students who pick up their passes are those that utilize the transit system, Caruso said. He said just observing the buses headed to UWM shows increased ridership.

“Last year we didn’t have people standing in the aisles (of buses),” Caruso said. “This year we do.”

UPark satellite parking lot use is also up from past years, with three lots accommodating more than 4,000 vehicles.

“It’s always crowded, always full,” said Claude Schuttey, director of parking and transit. “People have to wait in line just to get a spot.”

Both Caruso and Schuttey cited climbing gas prices and limited parking on or near campus as reasons why students are seeking alternative means of transportation.

“High gasoline prices have caused students to rethink their transportation, plus parking around campus is always a concern,” Caruso said. “I think that’s loud and clear.”

Caruso also pointed out a new marketing technique on the part of MCTS, which has helped to boost the UPass pick-up rate.

“I think the great discounts we secured at Noodles & Company motivated students to get their UPasses,” he said.

During September, students who showed their UPass at Noodles & Company received a free fountain drink with the purchase of an entrée. In addition, coupons were placed inside UPass holders. The coupons, which are valid through November, get students a free dessert with the purchase of an entrée.
