After a scoreless first half, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women’s soccer team was able to add two second-half goals in its 2-1 win versus UW-Green Bay in Green Bay on Friday, Sept. 23.
The game was UWM’s first game against a Horizon League opponent after going 2-4-2 versus non-conference teams.
UWM and UWGB held each other scoreless until the 60th minute, when UWM freshman forward Jodi Klagos scored from 12 yards out. Klagos received a cross pass from senior defenseman Janice McGann and chipped it over the goalkeeper. UWGB tried to attack early in the second half but could not get any shots on goal.
UWM put nine shots on goal in the second half, two of which were goals. In the 80th minute, UWM put the nail in the coffin with the game winner. A corner kick was awarded to UWM and sophomore defenseman Claire Pignet was given the opportunity to increase the lead.
Pignet sent a cross towards the Green Bay goal but it was cleared right back to her. Pignet attempted another cross and made it through and senior forward Katie Campion one-timed a shot past the keeper.
“Going into the second half, Katie Campion was generating well for us on the left side,” head coach Michael Moynihan said. “She put some good shots on net and came up with the goal for us late.”
UWM showed its defense can really shut down an opposing team’s attack. Led by junior goalkeeper Molly Duffy, who made her first collegiate start, UWM almost shutout its opponent.
In the 85th minute, Green Bay scored to make it 2-1. The game ended in the 90th minute and Duffy ended the game with four saves.
Duffy took the place of freshman goalkeeper Erin Kane. Kane injured her elbow in practice and Duffy came off the bench to replace her.
“The good thing about Molly's performance was that it emphasized our depth," Moynihan said. "We found out four hours before the game that we would be without our starting goalkeeper (Erin Kane). Duffy played well and made key saves, including a breakaway.”
